2019 Ram Chassis Cab is More Than Your Average Work Truck
Buyers looking to enjoy hi-tech commercial trucks are in luck because Ram is making that a reality thanks to their newly-introduced (and not to mention redesigned) 2019 Ram Chassis Cab. The truck brand continues to make waves with its revamped designs, first at the 2018 Detroit Auto Show with the award-winning all-new Ram 1500, then at the 2019 Detroit Auto Show with its redesigned heavy-duty lineup, and now at the 2019 Chicago Show with the revamped Ram Chassis Cab. Here’s what Ram is offering for commercial buyers starting in the 2019 model year.
Under the hood, Ram’s standard engine option (a 6.4-liter HEMI V8) remains unchanged and still provides an output of 410 horsepower and 429 lb-ft of torque when mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. An available six-speed automatic from Aisin paired to this same engine on the 4500 and 5500 trims makes 370 horsepower and 429 lb-ft of torque instead. Fuel-saving technology is a perk of this engine thanks to its Multi-Displacement System that shuts off four of the engine’s cylinders when the truck is cruising on the highway. A simple tap on the throttle reactivates all cylinders and makes for a seamless transition.
The 6.7-liter Cummins turbodiesel inline-six engine remains the optional engine and has been significantly upgraded for the 2019 model year. It now produces 360 horsepower and a whopping 800 lb-ft of torque – an increase of 35 horsepower and 50 lb-ft over its predecessor. Ram states that these changes to the engine, including a new engine block constructed of tougher compacted graphite iron, make the latest Cummins turbodiesel about 60 pounds lighter than the prior engine. Overall figures improve too, with as much as 35,220 pounds of towing capability and a payload of about 12,510 pounds.
Safety tech was also a priority when redesigning the 2019 Ram Chassis Cab. Every truck, regardless of trim, features adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and automatic emergency braking for any attached trailer as well. Parking sensors and a 270-degree camera help drivers maneuver their precious cargo without any hiccups. There’s also an available cargo-view camera that aims to let drivers keep an eye on the truck’s cargo bed via the infotainment touchscreen.
Upgrades aren’t only on the exterior, in fact, the Chassis Cab offers a significantly updated look with modernized designs and better-quality materials. Inside the Chassis Cab prospective buyers and owners will find the massive 12-inch Uconnect infotainment touchscreen that debuted on the Ram 1500, along with either a 3.5- or 7-inch color instrument cluster depending on their choice. Push-button start is now standard on all trims, and all trims with the eight-speed automatic transmission have a rotary-style-knob electronic shifter as well.
Additional cabin tweaks include larger windshield defroster vents and a climate-control system that offers 30-percent more airflow but lower noise. The revamped (and spacious) center console offers more storage space along with five USB ports and optional wireless charging. There are two 115-volt power outlets available as well for those looking to charge their tools, laptops, or other devices that require a bit more power than a USB. A subtle sharkfin antenna replaces the outdated whip antenna on the outside while reducing noise and improving reception.
