The Jeep brand built its reputation by constructing vehicles with superior all-terrain credentials, with its most iconic vehicle being the storied Jeep Wrangler. The Wrangler is currently enjoying its most popular run in years after gaining a new design for the first time since 2008 back in 2018 for its current generation. The offspring of the authentic U.S. military vehicle that generated the Jeep reputation and started the heritage of extreme off-road capability, the current Wrangler resumes with its latest and greatest Wrangler; the 2022 Jeep Wrangler 4xe. Today, the Wrangler represents all new tiers of execution, everyday modern technology, and sophistication. From the onset of the Second World War to the modern 2022 Jeep Wrangler and its 4xe trim, allow us to remind our readers of the storied history of the Jeep Wrangler and its evolution to where the brand will go next.

Battling the War With Help From Competitors

The early days of the Jeep Wrangler included a production run based on a redesigned Model T-Ford vehicle. The 4-wheel drive vehicle was lightweight and able to move in an effective manner as the Wrangler went overseas in the 1940s. The Willys Quad Wrangler was shifted into the GP (General Purpose) automobile that helped expand the Jeep brand with the closely refined detailing put into the early Wrangler into its Army-approved second-generation. As many as 368,000 of these new Wranglers were made for combat assignments. The Ford brand supported building 277,000 of these Wranglers to help the world defeat the Axis powers.

Enhancing the Wartime Wrangler Into a Modern Ride

By the ending of World War II, the 1945-1949 era Wrangler saw a CJ model become the treasured Willys CJ-2A, a choice of many. The 4-cylinder engine with its T-90A transmission delivered some upgrades over the previous generation. The CJ-3B followed and was the most improved Wrangler yet with an outstanding production run from 1953-1968. The range of Jeep vehicles developed over the next two decades, but the Wrangler stayed the favored choice with its CJ-5 option which was larger and more detailed with greater interior comfort. The CJ-5 had the most prolonged production run from 1955-1983 and owners enjoyed the massive V8 engine’s power that cranked out 155 horsepower with 225 lb-ft of torque. The CJ-6 came out in 1956 and went through 1976, but it wasn’t till the CJ-7 that the CJ-5 would become superseded. The CJ-7 saw a run from 1976 through 1986 and delivered optional steel doors with a significant redesign that was the first one in two decades.

Evolution In the 80’s and Iconic Rank By the 90s

Jeep began to offer everyday names for its Wrangler by the 1980s with its 1981-1985 Jeep Scambler, a distinct take on the celebrated Wrangler. This vehicle was longer and had the option of a soft or hardtop finish. Just 30,00 Scamblers were ever made, so look out for this rare classic retro Wrangler on the road. The modern Wrangler started to take shape by 1987 as the Wrangler YJ would come and be produced through 1995. For those who know the enormous pop-culture smash hit movie, Jurassic Park, this is that generation of Wrangler. Complete with the most owner-friendly interior and design, the Wrangler nameplate was used for the first time for this version of the Jeep mid-size SUV product. Fun fact: 1991 saw a Jeep Wrangler Renegade debut with 29-inch all-terrain tires. A very different version than the beloved Renegade sold today. The 1997-2006 Wrangler was the renowned TJ model that was replaced by the 2007-2017 Wrangler JK that offered a stylish interior and a fold-down windshield.

What the Wrangler Is Made of Today

Developing their brand to the modern Wrangler we market today is only one reason the Jeep brand is flat out cool and impressive. The Jeep brand is here to stay and only getting better with its advancement into the future and beyond as the 2022 Wrangler 4xe has changed the expectations for customers. The all-new 4xe trim Wrangler reached new heights with its concept, the fully-electric Jeep Magneto 2.0, into the full-fledged production vehicle sold today. The most impressive plans have already come in for the Jeep brand regarding the Jeep brand and the major investment the brand has made to develop its EV lineup that is involved with all Stellantis brands.
