For the time being, the 2020 Jeep Gladiator only offers one powertrain in its lineup – a classic 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 engine capable of generating 285 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. A diesel powertrain is slated to debut by the end of 2019, but Jeep has yet to make any official announcements. Additionally, there appears to be a plug-in hybrid variant planned to debut in the next few years. A six-speed manual transmission is standard, but buyers can opt for an impressive eight-speed automatic transmission as well. Fuel economy ratings on the 2020 Gladiator are as follows: 17 mpg in the city and up to 22 mpg while on the highway.
The 2020 Gladiator lineup consists of four trims total as follows: Sport, Sport S, Overland and Rubicon. The Gladiator Sport and Sport S trims are nearly identical with the exception that the Sport S adds air conditioning and a larger infotainment touchscreen display. The Gladiator Overland trim is considered the high-tier luxury trim of this midsize truck, while the Gladiator Rubicon is the creme of the off-roading crop.
Off-Road Capability
Designed to be off-road capable regardless of trim, all Gladiator pickups offer a ground clearance of 11.1 inches, water fording capability up to 30 inches, and there’s even a special high air intake system with specialized water sealing.
Additionally, all Gladiator pickups are equipped with the best 4×4 systems Jeep has. Off-road enthusiasts can rely on the Command-Trac 4×4 system (standard on the Sport, Sport S, and Overland trims) with a 2.72:1 crawl ratio is smooth and quiet, but strong enough to conquer even the roughest terrain. Standard on the Rubicon, the off-road gem of the lineup, is the Rock-Trac 4×4 system with a “4LO” ratio of 4:1, complete with Tru-Lok differentials, rear tow hooks, and skid plates.
