FCA Pentastar V6 Named Best Engine by WardsAuto
Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) and the brands under their umbrella continue to impress. Recently, the Waymo ride-hailing app, Waymo One, went live, thanks to the 62,000 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid units that make up the modified fleet. The 2019 Dodge Challenger is probably the best one yet, packing some serious horsepower and options. Plus, earlier this month (December 2018), Jeep unveiled their first pickup truck in over 10 years, the 2020 Jeep Gladiator, at the 2018 LA Auto Show. The news we bring today is about the newest Pentastar V6 engine by Fiat Chrysler, named on the WardsAuto “10 Best Engines” list for 2018.
“The versatility of our workhorse Pentastar V-6 engine family is unquestioned, with more than 9 million produced; and this latest Wards milestone represents the sixth time the 3.6-liter engine has been recognized with three different iterations…With the new eTorque mild-hybrid system, receiving the Wards 10 Best recognition validates our mission to provide customers optimal ownership value without sacrificing performance.” – Bob Lee, Head of Engine Powertrain and Electrified Propulsion Systems Engineering, FCA-North America.
This should come as no surprise really. Out of the 25 years WardsAuto has been writing up this and other lists, nine engines/systems produced by FCA US and its predecessor companies have accounted for 19 winners of the 25. The most recent winner is the Pentastar V6, but most importantly, when it’s powered by the FCA mild-hybrid eTorque system.
The eTorque mild-hybrid system was developed by FCA for a number of reasons, one of which is taking baby steps into the alternative fuel market with its off-road vehicles and trucks. In conjunction with replacing the need for an alternator on the 2019 Ram 1500, the eTorque has enough power to turn on the engine, run automotive electronics, and provide several hybrid functions. These include auto stop/start, electric power assist, extended fuel shut-off, transmission shift management, intelligent battery charging, and regenerative braking.
We brought up the example of the 2019 Ram 1500 because thus far, this is where we can see the most benefits. The standard powertrain for the new 2019 Ram 1500 is a 305hp Pentastar 3.6-liter V6 engine capable of generating 269 lb-ft of torque. Able to deliver an additional 90 lb-ft of torque in 400 milliseconds, this puts the engine capable of generating over 300 lb-ft of torque for tough jobs. Moreover, the V6 engine itself also lends a hand to the hard work of a truck.
Designed with new technology, the newest Pentastar V6 was built with a wide-range variable valve-timing and two-step variable-valve lift to deliver not only power but also improved fuel economy. On top of that, a cooled exhaust gas recirculation system was installed also to optimize fuel economy and emissions performance, even when hauling a lot of large cargo. That’s one of the reasons why WardsAuto put the Pentastar V6 on the list.
“The Pentastar V6 engine with eTorque shows how electrifying components of conventional engines can create magic under the hood…The all-new 48-volt mild-hybrid eTorque system provides a dollop of electrical propulsion during launch and while shifting gears, creating seamless, buttery smooth power to the wheels and improved fuel economy…Our judges recorded 21 to 22 mpg, outstanding for a full-size, four-wheel-drive pickup…The power of the eTorque system also makes the Ram’s fuel-saving stop-start system work almost imperceptibly. It’s one of the best around.” – Drew Winter, senior content director at WardsAuto.
