Ram 1500 is the First Full-Size Pickup to Earn an IIHS Safety Pick+ Award
The Ram 1500 full-size pickup Crew Cab has been named a Top Safety Pick for 2019. It’s the highest rating given by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). The rating applies to the 2020 Ram 1500 pickups and the 2019 trucks that are equipped with the adaptive LED projector headlamps (after May 2019); that also has high-beam assist as well as Forward Collision Mitigation and Ram’s Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) technology.
“This recognition validates our unrelenting efforts to deliver more value for our customers,” says Head of Ram Brand Reid Bigland. “The new Ram 1500 has earned many accolades for its capability and design. It is immensely satisfying to have the IIHS recognize our truck for its compelling safety story.”
The safety for the Ram 1500 has additions such as the patented approach to the frame-rail construction. As for the truck’s front frame-rails, they radiate so it can better manage the crash energy in different types of frontal collisions that can happen. IIHS conducted six crashworthiness evaluations, three simulated frontal impacts, and the Ram 1500 was recorded as “good” results, the highest possible rating that they got.
It was the same for the other three remaining crash tests, which the test inflict if the damage is consistent with a side impact, rear impact, and a rollover. Also different on the Ram 1500 is the use of an Integrated Radar Camera Module (IRCM) which accommodates Forward Collision Mitigation. The IRCM combines the radar and camera components behind the vehicle’s rearview mirror, which doesn’t only simplify their interface but it also keeps important technology out of harm’s way in case of a minor accident.
The Forward Collision Mitigation for the Ram 1500 vehicle, earned a “superior” rating from IIHS. The optional feature boasts the sensor-fusion technology, blending the camera capability with radar detection, which determines when an impact is coming. The system generally warns the driver to take action if a collision is unavoidable.
If the driver does not act fast enough, the system will activate the vehicle’s brakes if the collision risk is still prominent. The Top Safety Pick+ rating comes enabled with the adaptive LED projector headlamps that come with high-beam assist. The technology was refined in May of 2019, earning the highest IIHS rating of “good.”
A “good” rating in the headlamp testing is the latest requirement for the IIHS to earn a Top Safety Pick+. The Top Safety Pick+ rating for 2019 is the pinnacle, of many months in the spotlight for the Ram 1500. It’s gone from being Motor Trend Truck of the Year to a place among the Wards 10 Best Engines with a standard-equipment 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine with an eTorque.
